Summary of Case:

"Olutohsin Oduwole was wrongly convicted in October 2011 of attempting to make a terrorist threat in a note found in his car in 2007 when he was a 21-year-old SIU Edwardsville, Illinois student. The prosecution's case was based on a note found inside Oduwole's car on campus that said if $50,000 wasn't put in a Paypal account within 7 days a murderous rampage like the Virginia Tech shooting would occur at another University. The note did not specify SIUE. Oduwole was an aspiring rapper and his defense was the note was lyrics he was working on. After Oduwole's conviction by a jury he was sentenced to five years in prison. On March 6, 2013 the Illinois Court of Appeals vacated Olutohsin Oduwole convicton on the basis he did not take a substantial step toward completing the threat and because of that, the words in his written note were just thoughts. Oduwole was released from prison on March 18, 2013 after 17 months of imprisonment."
