Summary of Case:

"Olatunji Olaide was wrongly convicted in 1988 of murder. Olaide was arrested on the May 30, 1988 near Gwari in Niger state where he had travelled from Lagos to buy cattle to be transported to Lagos. Olaide was transported to Adeniji Adele Police Station in Lagos. The police didn't tell Olaide what he had been arrested for, but after torturing him he signed a confession to murder that the police had prepared. Olaide's trial started in 1989, but it wasn't concluded until six years later when he was found guilty and on trial started in 1989 and it ran on for 6 years until February 15, 1995, when Justice Da Silva found him guilty and sentenced him to death. Olaide I told the judge that day, “You have condemned me, but God did not condemn me.” In 2005 the Legal Defence and Assistance Project in Lagos accepted Olaide's case. Seven years later, on June 5, 2012 the Court of Appeals quashed Olaide's conviction and he was released from the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison.later that day. He had spent 17 years on death row, and more than 24 years in custody."
