Summary of Case:

"One of four co-defendants wrongly convicted of the 1997 murder of Sindulfo Miranda. The primary evidence against the four men were alleged confessions by two of the men, and the testimony of a police informant. The four men's convictions reversed in December 2002. On October 30, 2008 Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich pardoned Luis Ortiz on the basis of his actual innocence."

Conviction Caused By:

"Police misconduct. Alleged confessions by the four co-defendants to a police informant, and alleged confessions by two of the four defendants led to the convictions of the other two co-defendants. The alleged confessions were fabricated by the police. One of the confessions was in English, when the defendant only spoke English, and the signature on the confession wasn't his."
