Summary of Case:

"Dominick Owens was wrongly convicted in November 2011 of taking two bribes to sign occupancy permits in Chicago, Illinois. Owens was convicted by a jury under the federal bribery statute (18 U.S.C. § 666(a)(1)(B)) of twice taking a bribe of $600 to sign occupancy permits for houses. He was sentenced to one year and one day in prison. He appealed, and on October 11, 2012 the federal Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals overturned his conviction on the ground the federal bribery statute requires that a bribe involve a transaction "involving any thing of value of $5,000 or more, and since Owens only received a total of $1,2000, he had not committed a crime."
