Summary of Case:	"Fuat Necdet Ozerdil was wrongly convicted of aiding a March 1997 murder by taking an office boy who worked for his construction company to the hospital. Fuat Necdet Özerdil took the boy to the hospital after he knocked on the front door of Ozerdil's home, and the boy was injured. It was later learned the boy had been involved in a scuffle that resulted in a man being killed. Although questioned for four consecutive days, Ozerdil did not confess to any involvement in the incident. Arrested pending his trial, Ozerdil was convicted in 2000 and sentenced to 16 years and 8 months in prison. In 2004 the Supreme Court of Appeals overturned his conviction and acquitted him on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence he was involved in the altercation. Ozerdil was released after seven years of incarceration. Ozerdil, who had been a very wealthy man at the time of his arrest, was financially broken at the time of his release. On January 26, 2009 the 63-year-old Ozerdil was hospitalized after collapsing at a cafe in Istanbul, and he died later that day. It was ruled that he died of complications from lung cancer. The impoverished Ozerdil had been sleeping at night in the cafe. Ozerdil had filed a compensation claim for 1 million Turkish liras, but it had not been decided at the time of his death. (One million lira is the equivalent of US$587,796 at the exchange rate on February 22, 2009.)"
