Summary of Case:	"Maurice Patterson was wrongly convicted in 2002 of a Chicago murder. Based on DNA testing of the knife used to commit the crime that excluded Maurice Patterson as the perpetrator, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office dropped the charges and he was released on October 8, 2010. Pattterson was wrongly imprisoned for eight years. Patterson filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of Chicago and the Illinois State Police. In October 2012 Patterson settled the lawsuit with the City of Chicago for $3.4 million, and the Illinois State Police agreed to settle his lawsuit for $800,000. After he was granted a certificate of innocence, the State of Illinois awarded Patterson compensation of $173,000 in 2012."
