Summary of Case:

"George W. Patterson Jr. was wrongly convicted of committing fraud in 1873 by overstating the assets of his bank -- the George Washington Bank in Corning, New York. Patterson appealed his conviction. The New York Supreme Court overturned his conviction in its October 1877 term on the basis the judge had improperly denied Patterson the opportunity to present evidence that could have undermined the testimony of the prosecution's primary witness. The case was remanded back to Steuben County and the charges were dismissed. Patterson was financially ruined as a result of his prosecution, but he was able to settle with his creditors for 60 cents on the dollar."
