Summary of Case:

"Arthur Pender was wrongly convicted in 1913 of committing a murder in Columbia County, Oregon on September 4, 1911. He was arrested and jailed without bail for first-degree murder on September 15, 1911. His first trial ended in a mistrial when the jury couldn't reach a verdict. He was tried a second time and convicted on November 22, 1913 of murder, and on February 9, 1914 he was sentenced to death by hanging. In 1914 the Oregon Supreme Court affirmed his conviction and sentence on June 30, 1914. His sentence was later commutted in 1914 to life in prison. Based on a credible confession by the actual murderer he was granted a full pardon by Oregon Governor Olcott in 1920 and released after nine years of incarceration."
