Summary of Case:

"Michael Piaskowski was wrongly convicted in 1995 of participating with five other men in the 1992 beating murder of paper mill worker Tom Monfils. Mike Piaskowski and his five co-defendants were all sentenced to life in prison. After U.S. District Court Judge Myron Gordon ruled in regards to Piaskowski's habeas corpus petition that there was insufficient evidence to support his conviction, the State appealed. On July 10, 2001 the 7th Cir. Ct. of Appeals affirmed that decision saying: "The record is devoid of any direct evidence that Piaskowski participated in the beating of Monfils, and the available circumstantial evidence at most casts suspicion on him. This is a far cry from guilt beyond a reasonable doubt." Piaskowski was released in 2001, six years after his conviction. Piaskowski co-authored a book published in August 2009 about the case, The Monfils Conspiracy: The Conviction of Six Innocent Men. As of November 2009 Mike Piaskowski's five co-defendants remain imprisoned."
