Summary of Case:

"Daniela Poggiali was wrongly convicted in 2016 of murdering a woman in Lugo, Italy in 2014. Poggiali's prosecution was based on circumstantial evidence, because there was no direct evidence linking her to the crime. After her conviction Poggiali was sentenced to life in prison. Poggiali appealed, and the appeals court ordered a reevaluation forensic pathology reevaluation of the evidence related to the deceased woman's death. The forensic report cast doubt that the woman was even murdered, and may have died from natural causes. On July 7, 2017 the Italian Court of Appeal in Bologna set-aside Poggiali's conviction based on insufficient evidence she committed the crime, and ordered her immediate release from custody. "
