Summary of Case:	"Juan Pop was wrongly convicted on March 3, 2009 of carnal knowledge (rape) of a 13-year-old girl on May 23, 2007 at the police station where he was a constable. The prosecution's case was based on the girl's testimony. Juan Pop was sentenced to 12 years in jail. Pop appealed on the basis that he was misidentified, because there was no identification parade and the girl only described her assailant as a "short Spanish descent policeman." On October 14, 2009 Belize's Court of Appeal quashed Pop's conviction based on there being insufficient evidence for the case to have been submitted to the jury, and ordered his acquittal and immediate release. The 40-year-old Pop was released after almost 7-1/2 months of incarceration."
