Summary of Case:

"James Porter was wrongly convicted in the death of a child in August 2004. The three-year-old was a student at James Porter's private school, and the child developed a fatal swelling in his brain after he fell after jumping off of a step while playing. James Porter was convicted by a 11 to 1 majority vote after a seven day trial in July 2007, of violating England's child Health and Welfare laws. He was ordered to pay a fine of £12,500 and £7,500 in court costs, for a total of £20,000. In May 2008 England's Court of Appeals quashed James Porter's conviction, ruling that all pupils could fall down steps at any time, and the only way to stop them would be holding hands or to prevent access, which was "impossible"."
