"James Thomas Porter was twice wrongly convicted of the November 1, 1978 murder of a gas station attendent in Myersville, Maryland. Porter's first conviction in 1979 that resulted in a sentence of death on October 5, 1979 was overturned on appeal. Porter was retried. After Porter's second conviction he was sentenced to life in prison. Porter committed suicide while his appeal was pending. The Maryland Court of Appeal vacated his conviction in April 1982 and ordered dismissal of the charges with the prosecutors dropping their opposition to his appeal."
