Summary of Case:

"Kerry Porter was wrongly convicted in 1997 of murder in the shooting death of 35-year-old Tyrone Camp on December 27, 1996 in Louisville, Kentucky. Porter's prosecution was based on the eyewitness identification of Kenneth Brown. Although prior to trial Brown expressed doubts about his identification of Porter, he identified him as the shooter during his trial testimony. A post-conviction investigation of the case by the Jefferson County Commonwealth Attorney Office included Porter's exclusion as the source of DNA on the duct tape used to make a homemade silencer found at the crime scene. A joint motion by the Commonwealth Attorney's Office and Porter's attorney to vacate his conviction and dismiss the charges was granted on December 19, 2011. Porter filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of Louisville and officers involved in his case. In March 2012 Porter agreed to a settlement of his lawsuit for $7.5 million. The city spent $556,000 in fees and expenses to defeat Porter's lawsuit."
