Qiriniu served a month in custody in place of paying the fine. He appealed his conviction, and on June 18, 2013 Fiji High Court Justice Paul Madigan allowed Qiriniu's appeal and quashed his conviction and sentence, ruling that there was "no factual basis whatsoever to substantiage the charge.""
