Summary of Case:

"Joy Rahman was wrongly convicted on July 5, 1994 in the Stockholm District Court of murdering a 72-year-old woman in Stockholm on May 21, 1993. After his conviction Rahman was sentenced to life in prison. Rahman's conviction was affirmed by the Court of Appeal on September 14, 1994, and on October 31, 1994 the Supreme Court rejected review of his case. Investigation of Rahman's case by journalist Dick Sundevall and lawyer Peter Althin resulted in the discovery of new evidence. In January 2002 Sweden's Supreme Court granted Rahman a new trial. Later in 2002 he was acquitted after a retrial in the Svea Court of Appeals. In 2003 Rahman was granted damages of about 8 million Swedish Kronor for the suffering of him and his family due to his wrongful imprisonment. The damages were later increased to a total of SEK10.2 million (US$1.318 mil. at 1 SEK=0.129202 USD on 6-1-2003). Rahman used much of the money to establish the "Joy Rahman Welfare Foundation" in his birthplace of Gopalgonj, Bangladesh. The Foundation helps poor people with healthcare and offers micro loans. Rahman was 59 when arrested in Gopalgonj, Bangladesh on March 29, 2008, for suspicion of murdering a treasurer of the Joy Rahman Welfare Foundation in 2005. Rahman was released from custody on January 4, 2010 without being tried."
