Summary of Case:

"Ramanand was wrongly convicted in 2002 of culpable homicide (murder) in the deaths of his wife Anita, and his daughter Ekta on September 21, 2000 in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Ramanand's wife and daughter were found dead after a fire in their house that occurred when he was at his shop with his brother. He had been married for about ten years. His convictions were based on the trial judge's determination that medical evidence established that both Anita and Ekta had been strangled. Ramanand was sentenced to life in prison. Ramanand appealed. In 2006 the Rajasthan High Court acquitted him of culpable homicide, but found him guilty of abetting suicide of his wife and daughter. He was sentenced to 5 years and 4 months in prison, and discharged from prison. The State appealed the High Court's ruling. On April 11, 2017 the Supreme Court of India acquitted Ramanand of abetting suicide based on its determination that the medical evidence was clear that the two victims died as the result of strangulation, and not suicide, and affirmed his acquittal of culpable homicide because the prosecution failed to introduce sufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, and instead relied on only creating a suspicion of his possible guilt. The Court's ruling stated: "“It is impossible to assume how Anita could have strangulated herself and then attempted to set herself afire. The view taken by the high court is, therefore, wholly unjustified. ... However strong the suspicion be, in our view, the respondent [committed murder, he] is entitled to benefit of doubt and cannot be convicted under Section 302 IPC.""
