Summary of Case:

"Guy Randolph was wrongly convicted in 1991 of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl based on the girl's alleged identification of him. To obtain a reduced sentence than if he had been convicted after a trial, Guy Randolph made an Alford plea. Randolph was released on parole in 2001, and he served 7 years as a registered sex offender until the charges were dismissed in May 2008 by a Suffolk Superior Court judge, after the district attorney's office acknowledged that he had been wrongly convicted. The DA conceeded that there was no physical evidence tying Randolph to the crime, and tat the victim had initially told police he was not her attacker. Furthermore, during the grand jury investigation, the girl's description of her attacker did not match Randolph. However, by taking the Alford plea the girl's inconsistencies were not tested on cross-examination. In July 2008 Randolph filed a claim under Massachusetts' wrongful conviction compensation law, and he was awarded the maximum of $500,000 in 2010."
