Summary of Case:	David Ranta was wrongly convicted in 1991 of the murder and robbery of Rabbi Chaskel Wertzberg committed in 1990 in New York City. Ranta's conviction by a jury was based on his alleged confessinon to the crime that the claimed he never made. Ranta was sentenced to 37 years in prison. Ranta was exonerated and released in March 2013 based on new evidence NY City police detective Louis Scarcella fabricated Ranta's alleged confession. Ranta filed a federal civil rights lawsuit that named New York City as a defendant. In February 2014 Ranta and the city agreed to settle the lawsuit for $6.4 million.
