"Phoolchand Rathor was wrongly convicted on May 7, 2015 of murdering his wife, Sundariabai. Rathor was convicted based on his daughter's extrajudicial statement and circumstantial evidence provided by police. In December 2015 the Madhya Pradesh High Court overturned Rathor's conviction on the basis the prosecution introduced insufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The High Court noted that Rathor's conviction was based on "sentimentality," not evidence meeting the legal standard."
