Summary of Case:

"Tyson Gregory Redman was wrongly convicted on August 17, 2007 of six counts of reckless disregard for the safety of others, injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, wounding and unlawful assembly, related to an assault at a person's 21st birthday party on September 17, 2005 in Mt. Roskill, a suburban area of Auckland, New Zealand. Gregory Redman was 17 at the time of the incident. During Redman's trial from July 23 to August 17, 2007 his alibi defense is he wasn't present at the time of the incident. After Redman's conviction by a jury he was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison. Redman's conviction was affirmed on appeal and he was released from prison after completing his sentence. Redman filed a post-conviction appeal based on new evidence from eight eyewitnesses that he wasn't present when the assault took place, with governor-general Sir Anand Satyanand, and an order-in-council was passed referring Redman's case back to the Court of Appeal. On December 19, 2013 New Zealand's Court of Appeal quashed Redman's conviction based on his new evidence of multiple eyewitnesses that cast doubt he was present. The Court's ruling stated in part: "Faced with this evidence, a jury might well have a reasonable doubt, Accordingly, the appeal should be allowed and the convictions, apart from that of unlawful assembly, quashed. In the ordinary course a new trial would be ordered, but as [Redman] has served his full sentence we do not now order a retrial." In 2014 Redman applied for compensation from the New Zealand government. On April. 24, 2018 by New Zealand Justice Minister Andrew Little announced that Redman had accepted the government's offer of NZL$551,017.16 (US$391,332.39). The total includes AUS$475,722.75 for non-pecuniary losses adjusted for inflation, and AUS$75,294.41 for pecuniary losses (including his finalised legal costs). (The currency exchange rate on April 24, 2018 was AUS$.7102 to US$1.)"
