"James Reed was a blacksmith in the Jamestown colony in 1607 when he got into a fight with the colony's council President John Ratcliffe. Reed was convicted of assault and sentenced to death. Reed was pardoned after he persuaded the council while awaiting execution that Captain George Kendall, a member of the council, was involved in a conspiracy. Reed is believed to be the first person convicted and sentenced to death in the British colonies. Kendall over protestations of his innocence, was convicted and in the fall of 1608 he was executed. Kendall is believed to be the first person executed after being convicted of a crime in the British colonies."
