Summary of Case:	"Marvin Reed and his nephew DeShawn Reed were codefendants. The Reeds were wrongly convicted in August 2001 of attempted murder in the shooting of a man driving his car in Ecorse, Michigan on March 12, 2000. Based on new evidence that key prosecution witnesses had lied and new witness evidence who had actually committed the shooting, the Reeds filed a petiton for a new trial, which was granted in Wayne County Circuit Court on July 10, 2009. With the agreement of the Wayne County DA the charges were dismissed on July 31, 2009, and the Reeds were released after more than 9 years in custody. In 2012 the Reeds settled their federal civil rights lawsuit against the Ecorse Police Department for $3.1 million."
