Summary of Case:

"Douglas Harry Rendell was wrongly convicted on March 4, 1980 of murdering his girlfriend in 1979 in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. Based on new evidence of Mr. Rendell's innocence, on 14 February 1987 an inquiry under section 475 of the Crimes Act was ordered by Magistrate A. M. Reidel. Mr. Justice Hunt presented his report to the Governor on 23 June 1989, being satisfied that Rendell's conviction was unsafe and unsatisfactory, and recommended a pardon. Rendell's free pardon was announced by New South Wales' Attorney General John Dowd on 26 July 1989. Douglas Rendell received ex gratia compensation of AUS$100,000 in April 1993 after signing a release from the Attorney General that the payment would be set off against any future amounts that may be awarded to him against the Government by way of compensation, damages or the like. In 1997 Rendell's Application to Set Aside Wrongful Conviction was granted by the New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeal and verdict of acquittal was entered."
