Summary of Case: |
"Keith Richards was wrongly convicted in June 1967 of allowing drug use in his home after the police were called during a February 1967 party. After Richards was convicted and sentenced to one year in prison. Related to the same party, fellow Rolling Stones member Mick Jagger was convicted of possessing amphetamine tablets without a prescription and sentenced to four months in prison. Jagger was convicted even though there was credible evidence that the tablets allegedly found in his possession had been prescribed to him. The Times (of London) published an Editorial on July 1, 1967, written by editor William Rees-Mogg under the title, "Who Breaks A Butterfly On A Wheel." The public outrage over the conviction and sentences of the two is believed to have contributed to the quashing of Richards' conviction. Richards was jailed for a total of three days. it was learned that the raid was the result of a tip to the London Drug Squad by reporters for the News Of The World, which was running a series of stories about the alleged use of illegal drugs by British rock stars. (News of the World was owned by Rupert Murdoch)" |
