Summary of Case:

"Jone Robanakadavu was wrongly convicted on March 13, 2017 of obtaining financial advantage by deception in Nausori, Fiji on January 16, 2015. Robanakadavu was convicted based on his guilty plea, after which he was sentenced to two years in prison with a minimum of 1-1/2 years before he was eligible for parole. Robanakadavu appealed his sentence, but it came to light during his appeal that his conviction based on his guilty plea was suspect. On July 3, 2017 the Fiji High Court at Suva set-aside Robanakadavu's guilty plea and quashed his conviction on the basis the prosecution failed to introduce evidence proving all essential elements of the crime -- namely he had no intent to enrich himself at the expense of the complainant -- and the judge should not have accepted the plea. The Court ordered Robanakadavu's acquittal and discharged him from custody."
