"Van Bering Robinson was wrongly convicted in 1981 of first-degree murder in the killing an Albuquerque police officer. Three Albuquerque police officers falsified information to frame Robinson for the murder. Robinson filed a federal civil rights lawsuit, and in October 1985 a jury awarded Robinson $75,000 in damages against the three officers. It was the first monetary award in a civil rights case against the Albuquerque police department. Van Bering Robinson's criminal and civil cases were handled by Albuquerque attorney Jim Toulouse."
