"Santo Rodriguez was convicted in 1954 of murdering Mrs. Mildred Hosmer based on his false confession. After his conviction by a jury Rodriguez was sentenced to life in prison. His appeal was dismissed for late filing. The actual culprit was found, confessed, and was convicted. Rodriguez spent 39 months in prison though innocent. Rodriguez was pardoned by Massachusetts' governor in April 1957. On April 11, 1958 Rodriguez was awarded $12,500 in compensation by the Massachusetts state legislature."
