Summary of Case:

"Donte Rollins was wrongly convicted in 2008 of the attempted murder in the shooting of a 6-year-old boy in Philadelphia in January 2006. The boy was rendered a quadriplegic from the shooting. Rollins prosecution was based on an eyewitness. Rollins alibi defense was that at the time of the crime he was several miles from the shooting. After his conviction by a jury Rollins was sentenced to serve a maximum of 125 years in prison. Based on evidence by multiple witnesses, CCTV store surveillance video, store receipts, and cell phone records that was known to his family, but not introduced during his trial even though it established Rollins was several miles from the scene of the shooting, in April 2016 the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office filed a petition to grant Rollins a new trial. Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Rayford Means denied the D.A.’s petition for a new trial. The DA's Office appealed. The Pennsylvania Superior Court reversed the judge's ruling and granted Rollins a new trial. On December 21, 2016 the DA's motion to dismiss the charges against Rollins based on the new evidence supporting his innocence Q6723was granted, and he was released later that day."
