Summary of Case:	"Zhou Rukou was wrongly convicted and sentenced to death in September 2002 of the robbery and murder of an 84-year-old man in the village where he lived. After Zhou Rukou was arrested on suspicion of the crime, he was tortured by 12 policement into falsely confessing to the crime. His conviction was based on the confession and a bruise on his neck that prosecutors said was proof he struggled with the victim. However there was no evidence linking him to the crime scene, nor was the murder weapon found, nor was there any other evidence he was involved in the crime. In November 2003 Rukou's was acquitted by a provincial court after a retrial based on a lack of evidence, and he was released on bail. In April 2005 the charges were dropped. In November 2005 Rukou filed a lawsuit against the prosecutor's office claiming he was tortured while in custody and wrongly prosecuted for the murder. Rukou was imprisoned for 19 months. In November 2005 Rukou filed a lawsuit against the prosecutor and the court demanding compesation equivalent to $160,000 US."
