Summary of Case:

"Jason David Sadowski was wrongly convicted in 2014 of solicitation to commit murder, two counts of torture, two counts of unlawful imprisonment, and two counts of assault by strangulation on July 2, 2013. Sadowski's prosecution was based on the testimony of the two alleged victims, and statements by Sadowski's codefendant Charles Cope implicating Sadowski. The trial judge denied Sadowski's objection to the admission of Cope's statements because he didn't testify so Sadowski couldn't cross-examine him. After his conviction by a jury Jason Sadowski was sentenced to a total of 40 to 80 years in prison. On December 22, 2016 the Michigan Court of Appeals reversed Sadowski's conviction and ordered a new trial based on the trial judge's erroneous admission of Cope's statements that violated Sadowski's right to confront him. Sadowski was acquitted by a jury of all charges on March 17, 2017 after a retrial. Cope's convictions for torture and unlawful imprisonment were affirmed on appeal and he is serving his 25 to 40 year sentence."
