Summary of Case:

"Safran S. A. was wrongly convicted in September 2012 of corruption for allegedly being involved in a scheme to bribe Nigerian civil servants between 2000 and 2003 to win a 214m$ contract for 70 million ID cards. The trial court acquitted two Safran executives -- Jean-Pierre Delarue and François Perrachon. On January 7, 2015 the Paris Court of Appeals set aside Safran's conviction, while at the same time upholding the trial court's acquittal of the two Safran executives. Under French law, a company may only be held criminally liable if it is tied to the criminal actions of an employee, and arguably only to the actions of a senior employee. Absent the conviction of either Safran employee, the appeals court held that Safran, as a legal entity, could not itself be held liable for the alleged bribery scheme."
