Based on new evidence of Sanders' innocence because he had been misidentified, his conviction was dismissed with prejudice on June 6, 1997 and he was released after 7 months in custody. On January 24, 2008 the Wisconsin Claims Board awarded Sanders' compensation of $5,000 plus $18,240 in attorney's fees."
