Summary of Case:

"Irene Santiago wrongly pled guilty in 2005 to testifying falsely before a grand jury in exchange for cooperating with government investigators. Her testimony helped convict six brokers and traders who were convicted in 2009 of charges related to alleged wrongdoing between 2002 and 2004 when they worked for A. B. Watley, Inc. The cases became known as the "squawk box" cases. Santiago also worked at Watley, primarily as an assistant to Timothy O'Connell, who was one of the six defendants. Santiago was sentenced in 2010 to pay a fine of $10. The convictions of the six defendants were overturned on appeal in 2012, and in 2013 they entered into an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office that would result in dismissal of their charges. On June 30, 2014 U.S. District Court Judge Leo Glasser vacated Irene Santiago's guilty plea and vacated her conviction. In vacating Santiago's conviction Judge Glasser said that in light of the overturning of the convictions of the six defendants at the center of the case, it would be unfair to make Santiago a "real-life Hester Prynne, condemned to wear her scarlet letter of conviction for life." (Hester Prynne is the protagonist of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel "The Scarlet Letter".)"
