"Alexander Schlesinger was the co-defendant of Reginald Dunk. Both men were wrongfully convicted of attempting to smuggle 200 Sterling machine-guns to Iraq through Jordan. After his trial in 1985, when he falsely changed his plea to guilty after defense witnesses suddenly refused to testify on his behalf. His conviction was quashed in 1994 after it became known that the British government had pressured the embassies of Iraq and Jordan to deprive Mr. Dunk and Mr. Schlessinger of their witnesses by claiming diplomatic immunity. Dunk and Schlesinger were both awarded £125,000 in compensation in 1999 by England's Foreign Service." |
