Summary of Case: |
"Jeff Schmieder and Mark Clark were codefendants convicted in 1998 of a rape that allegedly occurred in Auburn, Washington. The only evidence against the two men was the testimony of the alleged victim. While the men were awaiting sentencing Clark's wife, Jill, investigated on her own and found out from the alleged victim's boyfriend that she had been in the Auburn City Jail at the time she alleged the rape took place. She been booked under her married name and she hadn't been fingerprinted, which is why a search under her maiden name turned up no record of her arrest. Clark's wife also found evidence that at the time of the alleged rape Clark had been in the Auburn traffic court. Based on the new evidence the convictions of Schmieder and Clark were vacated in 1999 and they were released after almost a year in custody." |
