"Harry Schwartz and Newton Watt were codefendants. Both men were convicted of the March 12, 1886 murder and robbery of Kellogg Nichols on a Rock Island Express train traveling from Chicago and Davenport, Illinois. Nichols had $22,500 in cash on him. Both Watt and Harry Schwartz were convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Watt died in prison in March 19, 1889. In 1898 Illinois Governor John Peter Altgeld pardoned Schwartz."
