Summary of Case:

"Mohammed Atif Siddique was wrongly convicted in October 2007 in Scotland of terrorism related charges for looking at articles on the Internet that gave rise to "reasonable suspicion" they were connected to terrorism. The prosecution did not allege during his trial that Siddique who was a 21-year-old student when he was arrested, had ever committed an act of terrorism or done anything that furthered terrorism, only that he had looked at webpages showing terrorism. After a four-week trial Mohammed Siddique was convicted by a jury and sentenced to 8 years in prison. Siddique appealed. On January 29, 2010 Scotland's Court of Appeal quashed Siddique's conviction on the basis the trial judge had not properly instructed the jury what constituted an offense under the statute. The Crown Prosecution Service declined to retry Siddique and he was released on February 9, 2010."
