Summary of Case:

"Lloyd Simons was wrongly convicted in December 2001 of armed robbery, accessory to rape and the unlawful possession of a weapon and ammunition, related to a March 1998 crime. He was tied to the crime scene by his cell phone, that he said he had purchased from another person after the crime had been committed. Lloyd Simons was sentenced to 33 years in prison. After Simons conviction his family hired a private investigator who tracked down the records proving that the cell phone wasn't owned by Simons at the time of the crime. In late 2002, Simons conviction was quashed on appeal by the Pretoria High Court, and he was released after a year of wrongful imprisonment. In Feburary 2007 Simons filed a claim for 1.1million Rand ($155,382 converted on Feb. 22, 2007.) with the Minister of Safety and Security claiming that his conviction was the result of a poor police investigation."
