Summary of Case:

"Mervin Singh was wrongly convicted of having nine packets of heroin in his possession in November 2008. Singh's prosecution was based on the testimony of narcotics bureau officer that from a distance of 265' (81 meters) he saw Singh look in a small pink box in which the heroin was found. Singh's defense was he didn't look in the box that he thought contained contraband cigarettes. After Singh's conviction he was sentenced to death. Singh appealed on the basis the officer's original statement did not include that he saw Singh look in the box, and he didn't have binoculars so he couldn't have reliably been able to seen if Singh looked in the box. On March 8, 2013 Singapore's Court of Appeal agreed with Singh's arguments and quashed his conviction on the basis the prosecution had insufficient evidence of his guilt because the eyewitness testimony was unreliable."
