Summary of Case:

"Parrish Nathaniel Slade was wrongly convicted on May 2, 1989 of first-degree child sexual assault in Moore County, North Carolina. Slade's prosecution was based on his alleged sexual assault of his girlfriend's 11-year-old son. After his conviction by a jury Parrish Slade was sentence to life in prison. In 2008 Slade discovered that the prosecution had failed to disclose a document by Moore County Sheriff’s Detective Timothy Monroe, who investigated the case, that a physical exam of the boy seven days after the alleged assault found "no evidence of rectal injury." Additional exculpatory documents were discovered, including that at the time of the alleged assault the boy was with his grandmother -- who had given conflicting accounts of the alleged assault. Based on the new evidence Slade filed a petition for a new trial, which was granted in June 2011, and Slade was released on bond. The judge ruled the prosecution committed a Brady violation by failing to disclose the medical evidence, and Slade's trial lawyer provided ineffective assistance of counsel for failing to subpoena the social services files for the boy. The Moore County District Attorney's Office declined to retry Slade, and the DA's motion to dismiss the charges was granted on December 21, 2012. In February 2014 Slade filed a federal civil rights lawsuit that named as defendants: Moore County Sheriff's Det. Tim Monroe, Moore County Sheriff Neil Godfrey, the Hoke County Department of Social Services and John Doe employees of both counties. In January 2015 Parrish Slade settled his lawsuit for $750,000 in compensation from the Moore County Sheriff's Office and the Hoke County Dept. of Social Services."
