After his conviction by a jury Sledge was sentenced to life in prison. On January 23, 2015 Sledge's conviction was vacated by a three-judge panel based on the new evidence of post-conviction DNA testing of crime scene evidence excluded Sledge, and the State's key witness recanted his trial testimony in 2013. Sledge was released after more than 38 years in custody."
