Summary of Case:

"Edward J. Parlton and Alfred Smith were codefendants wrongly convicted of arson in a fire on July 9, 1933 at a college fraternity they were members of in Washington D.C. The prosecution only presented circumstantial evidence, and Parlton and Smith presented the alibi defense supported by a number of witnesses that they were not at the fraternity anytime on the night of the fire. After their convictions U.S. Attorney General Homer Cummings investigated their alibi further, and became conviced they couldn't have committed the crime. The government's appeal brief admitted the conviction of the two defendants was in error, and the U.S. Ct of Appeals agreed and reversed their convictions on February 4, 1935. Edward Parlton and Alfred Smith were acquitted in January 1935 after a retrial. They were not paid any compensation for their wrongful convictions."
