"John Smith was wrongly convicted in January 1608 of what passed for a judiical proceeding in Jamestown, Virginia, of being culpable for the death of two men in an Indian attack. Smith was the leader of the party that was attacked. Smith was sentenced to death by hanging. The night before he was to be executed, the ship the "John and Francis" arrived in Jamestown. The ship's captain, Christopher Newport, reviewed the evidence against Smith and determined he had done nothing wrong. Smith was released."
