Summary of Case:

"Josef Soehngen was convicted on July 13, 1943 of aiding and abetting members of the White Rose who produced and distributed leaflets around Germany that exposed atrocities by the Nazis. He was sentenced to 6 months in prison. Soenghen had originally been charged with treason and faced a death sentence, but the evidence against him and 3 of his co-defendants was lost. His co-defendants were acquitted. During Soehngen's trial Gisela Schertling recanted her statement to the Gestapo that the four men were involved in the White Rose. Soehngen was a bookseller who had provided the White Rose members with a safe meeting place for the exchange of information and to receive occasional financial contributions. Soenghen kept a stash of banned books hidden in his store. By a legislative decree in 1983 the White Rose participants convictions were stripped of any legal force in 1983."
