Summary of Case:

"Raffaele Sollecito and his co-defendant and former girlfriend Amanda Knox were wrongly convicted in September 2009 of murder and sexual assault in the November 2007 murder of her housemate Meredith Kercher. Knox was also convicted of slandering Diya 'Patrick' Lumumba by falsely implicating him in Kercher's murder, which is why she was sentenced to 26 years in prison while Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years. They appealed and during their appeal the 8 person jury (2 judges and 6 lay people) considered new DNA evidence ordered by the court that excluded the two from the crime scene. On October 3, 2011 the appeals court acquitted Knox and Sollecito. Knox's conviction of slandering Diya 'Patrick' Lumumba by implicating him in Kercher's murder was affirmed. She was given the maximum sentence of three years in prison and ordered to pay Lumumba 22,000 euros as the cost of his defense. Because she had already served four years in custody her immediate release was ordered. Several hours after the court's ruling Knox and Sollecito were released. Their convictions were reinstated on appeal. On March 27, 2015 Italy's Court of Cassation (equivalent of U.S. Supreme Court) overturned Knox and Sollecito's convictions and ordered their acquittal on the basis the prosecution introduced insufficient evidence of their guilt."
