Summary of Case:

"Edward Splatt was wrongly convicted in South Australia in 1978 of murdering murdering an elderly woman at her home near the Cheltenham Cemetery. His false conviction was based on the suspect forensic testimony about the evidentiary value of trace evidence. Splatt's conviction was based solely on scientific and circumstantial evidence. His cause was taken up by reporter Stuart Cockburn of the Advertiser. With Splatt protesting his innocence and apparent irregularities in the evidence, the government agreed to a Royal Commission to investigate the case. In 1984 a Royal Commission was convened and it determined Splatt's conviction was unsafe because of irregularities in the "scientific" evidence used to convict him. Edward Splatt was subsequently released from prison in 1984 and compensated with $270,000 (AUS) for 6 years of false imprisonment. "
