Summary of Case: |
"J. Leonard Spodek was wrongly convicted in 1990 of failing to comply with orders from New York City to make repairs to two apartment buildings he owned in Brooklyn. Spodek was sentenced to two years in prison and fined $11,000. During Spodek's sentencing hearing Judge Amy Herz Juviler stated, "I have never seen any defendant before me who sees himself as much above the law as Mr. Spodek does." On December 7, 1992 the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court reversed Spodek's convictions on the basis they were based on hearsay information provided by an inspector and a lawyer for the city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development." |
