Summary of Case:

"Mary Squires was wrongly convicted on February 26, 1753 and sentenced to hang for robbing and assaulting Elizabeth Canning in January 1753. Squires conviction was solely based on the testimony of Canning. Squires alibi defense, supported by the testimony of three witnesses, is she was in Dorsetshire 126 miles southwest of Moorfields (near London) when Squires was allegedly robbed and assaulted there. Squires was pardoned by King George II on May 30, 1753 based on the evidence she was innocent. Squires was wrongly imprisoned for more than 3 months. In May 1754 Canning was convicted of perjury and giving false testimony against Mary Squires, and she was sentenced to seven years transportation. Canning left England on a ship bound for New England on the July 31, 1754."
