Summary of Case: |
"Gregory Joseph Stadtmiller was in his late 20s when he was wrongly convicted on March 2, 1993 of aggravated assault against his 13-year-old niece for playfully picking her up and carrying her into a room during a family gathering on October 18, 1992 in Redcliffe, Queensland, Australia. No sexual contact occurred and none was alleged, and when she asked to rejoin the gathering he did nothing to stop her. Geoffrey Robert Stegman was the Queensland police detective who investigated the case. On May 31, 1993 Queensland's Court of Appeal quashed Gregory Stadtmiller conviction because the evidence at trial was his niece consented to her uncle's playful actions, so no crime occurred." |
